1. Preface: Pipelines Are The Lifeline of Cold Room Installation

A stable and durable cold room relies fundamentally on its refrigerant pipeline system. The pipeline connection process and pipe material selection directly determine the cooling efficiency, energy consumption and service life of cold rooms. Thailand features year-round high temperature, high humidity and high salt content in coastal air. Ordinary pipelines are prone to leakage, condensation corrosion and severe cold loss. Professional cold room installation must adopt customized pipeline construction solutions adapted to tropical climates.

XB Refrigeration Co., Ltd. has long engaged in local cold room installation projects across Thailand. Centered on standardized pipeline connection construction, we build long-lasting and stable cold room pipeline systems for fresh food, aquatic product, food processing and pharmaceutical cold chain enterprises, and avoid common failures such as pipeline leakage, cold bridge and corrosion.

2. Comparison of Mainstream Refrigerant Pipeline Materials (Adapted to Thailand’s Tropical Working Conditions)

Different pipe materials fit cold rooms of different scales and refrigerant types. Combined with Thailand’s high temperature and humid climate, we sort out a detailed comparison of three commonly used pipelines:

Pipe Material

Core Advantages

Applicable Cold Room Scenarios

Adaptability to Thailand’s Environment

Long-term Operation & Maintenance Cost

High-purity Copper Pipe

High thermal conductivity, strong flexibility, excellent welding tightness, compatible with R404A / R507 refrigerants; bending reduces leakage risks at welding points

Medium & small fresh-keeping rooms, pharmaceutical cool rooms, commercial cold rooms within 500㎡

Excellent, moisture-proof and anti-condensation, free from corrosion in rainy seasons; the top choice for cold room installation of small & medium merchants in Thailand

Low, ultra-low failure rate, pipeline replacement is unnecessary within 10 years

20# Seamless Steel Pipe

High mechanical strength, strong pressure resistance, low procurement cost, suitable for large-flow refrigerant transportation

Large aquatic freezing rooms, food processing plants, low-temperature quick-freezing rooms over 1000㎡

Good; outer walls need thick anti-corrosion paint and moisture-proof thermal insulation layers; regular rust maintenance is required for coastal areas

Medium, pipeline anti-corrosion maintenance is needed every 3 to 5 years

304 Stainless Steel Pipe

Outstanding salt spray & acid-base corrosion resistance, inner walls resist oxidation, compatible with brine secondary refrigerant systems

Coastal seafood cold rooms, pharmaceutical low-temperature rooms, high-humidity processing cold rooms

Perfect, resists salt erosion from coastal sea wind, no rust after long-term operation

High, higher cost for pipe materials and welding construction, service life over 15 years

Pipeline connection is the most failure-prone procedure during cold room installation. At present, three mainstream connection methods are widely adopted in the industry: brazing welding, flange connection and threaded connection, with obvious differences in applicable scenarios.

3.1 Brazing Welding Connection

Dedicated connection technology for copper pipes. Nitrogen filling is required during welding to prevent oxide scales from blocking pipelines. Weld joints feature excellent tightness with almost zero leakage risk. It is suitable for long-term non-detachable main refrigerant circuits, and is the first-choice construction process for medium & small-scale cold room installation in Thailand. Its only disadvantage is complicated disassembly for later pipeline maintenance.

3.2 Flange Connection

Main detachable connection method for steel pipes and stainless steel pipes. Low-temperature resistant sealing gaskets are installed between flanges for strong pressure resistance. Valves, filters and other accessories requiring regular maintenance all adopt flange connection. It is suitable for sectional construction of main pipelines in large cold rooms, facilitating partial pipeline replacement and maintenance in later periods. Flange connection is widely used in cold room installation of large cold chain factories in Thailand. The shortcoming is that sealing gaskets tend to age after repeated high & low temperature cycles, requiring gasket replacement every 2 to 3 years.

3.3 Threaded Connection

Only applicable to low-pressure auxiliary pipelines with pipe diameter below 76mm. Sealing tape and anti-corrosion sealant are wrapped around threads for simple construction, suitable for connecting condensate water and defrost water auxiliary pipelines of small cold rooms. Threaded connection is not recommended for main refrigerant circuits. Under Thailand’s large temperature difference environment, thermal expansion and contraction easily cause thread leakage, so it is only used as an auxiliary pipeline connection scheme.

4. Exclusive Pipeline Construction Specifications for Cold Room Installation Under Thailand’s Tropical Climate

In response to Thailand’s climate features: year-round temperature above 30℃, air humidity over 85% and heavy coastal salt fog, XB Refrigeration Co., Ltd. implements four exclusive standards during pipeline construction for cold room installation:

1. Standardized Pipeline Gradient: Suction pipes slope 0.3%-0.5% towards compressors, exhaust pipes slope 0.5%-1% towards condensers. This prevents liquid slugging damage to compressors and avoids poor oil return failures under high-temperature working conditions.

2. Cold Bridge Cut-off & Moisture-proof Thermal Insulation: Thermal insulation rubber gaskets are installed on pipeline supports. The thickness of thermal insulation layers for low-temperature pipelines is increased by 30%, with aluminum foil moisture-proof layers wrapped on the outer surface to eliminate water dripping, frosting and cold loss on pipeline surfaces in Thailand’s high-humidity environment.

3. Anti-corrosion & Sun Protection Treatment: Outdoor pipelines are equipped with galvanized sun-proof wire grooves. Two layers of high-temperature resistant anti-rust paint are brushed on steel pipe outer walls. An additional epoxy coating is applied to cold rooms in coastal areas to resist salt fog corrosion.

4. Dual Inspection of Pressure Test & Vacuum Pumping: After pipeline connection, nitrogen is pressurized to 1.5 times the design pressure for a 24-hour pressure holding test with no pressure drop. Then vacuum pumping is conducted below 10Pa. Dual inspections eliminate tiny weld leakage and guarantee long-term stable operation after cold room installation.

5. Full Text Summary

When conducting professional cold room installation in Thailand, the refrigerant pipeline system is the core link determining cold room operation performance. Pipe materials should be flexibly selected according to cold room scale, coastal/inland location and stored goods categories. Pipeline connection processes are distinguished between main circuits and maintenance accessories, with priority given to ensuring tightness of refrigerant pipelines. Meanwhile, four key construction procedures – gradient setting, thermal insulation, anti-corrosion treatment and pressure inspection – must be implemented following exclusive tropical construction specifications.

XB Refrigeration Co., Ltd. possesses rich construction experience in cold room installation covering all regions of Thailand. We customize complete pipeline connection and pipe material selection schemes based on customers’ cold room volume, temperature requirements and location (inland / coastal), providing one-stop cold chain services including site survey, design, pipeline construction, complete machine commissioning and after-sales maintenance. We build energy-saving, low-failure high-quality cold rooms adapted to tropical climates for all types of Thai enterprises.

6. Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: For small & medium merchants in Thailand carrying out cold room installation, should they choose copper pipes or steel pipes for pipelines?

A1: For fresh food, fruit & vegetable and pharmaceutical fresh-keeping cold rooms within 500㎡, high-purity copper pipes are the optimal choice. They deliver fast heat conduction, moisture-proof and anti-corrosion performance, fit Thailand’s high temperature and high humidity climate, and achieve lower comprehensive costs in early construction and later maintenance. Seamless steel pipes are only recommended for large low-temperature quick-freezing cold rooms over 1000㎡.

Q2: Pipelines of cold room installation projects in Thailand’s coastal areas are prone to rust. How to solve this problem?

A2: 304 stainless steel pipes are the priority choice for pipelines of coastal cold rooms. If seamless steel pipes are selected under budget constraints, epoxy anti-corrosion coating and double layers of high-temperature resistant anti-rust paint must be brushed on outer walls. Galvanized sun-proof wire grooves are installed for outdoor pipelines, and thickened aluminum foil moisture-proof layers are wrapped outside pipeline thermal insulation layers. Annual regular pipeline anti-corrosion inspections are required.

Q3: What are the causes of pipeline leakage after finishing cold room installation pipeline connection?

A3: Leakage mainly falls into three categories: 1. No nitrogen filling protection during brazing welding, leading to pores and gaps on weld joints; 2. Aging flange sealing gaskets or misaligned flange end faces during installation; 3. Insufficient sealing tape wrapped on threaded connections, resulting in gaps caused by thermal expansion and contraction under high temperature. XB Refrigeration Co., Ltd. conducts a 24-hour pressure holding test after construction to eliminate pipeline leakage failures from the source.
