1. Why is the selection of cold storage unit so critical?

The cold storage unit is the heart of a cold storage room, which directly determines the stability of storage temperature, energy consumption cost and equipment service life. Thailand features high temperature and high humidity all year round, and the unit runs under heavy load for a long time. Improper selection will lead to insufficient cooling capacity, failure to lower the storage temperature at the least, or frequent start-stop of the compressor, soaring energy consumption and even burnout in severe cases. For investors, spending more time in the selection stage is far better than repeated maintenance in the later period.

2. Step 1: Confirm the usage and target temperature of your cold storage

Different goods have completely different temperature requirements, which decide the evaporation temperature and cooling capacity configuration of the unit. The table below shows common temperature ranges for preliminary reference:

Cold Storage Type

Target Temperature

Description

High-temperature fresh-keeping storage (Fruits, vegetables, flowers)

0~5℃

Require high-air-volume air cooler and humidity control

Medium-temperature refrigerated storage

-18℃

For meat, dairy and other frozen goods

Low-temperature freezer storage

-23℃~-25℃

For aquatic products and deep-frozen meat, requiring stable temperature

Quick-freezing storage

-30℃~-35℃

Special quick-freezing units required

3. How to select the compressor type? (Core Comparison)

The compressor is the most critical component of the unit, mainly divided into three types by structure:

Type

Applicable Cooling Capacity

Energy Efficiency

Maintenance

Features

Scroll Compressor

Small (3~30HP)

High, stable operation

Simple structure, easy maintenance

Suitable for small cold storage, low noise

Reciprocating Piston Compressor

Medium (5~100HP)

Medium

Many vulnerable parts

Moderate price, widely used

Screw Compressor

Large (Above 50HP)

High, continuous operation available

High maintenance requirement

Suitable for large/parallel systems, long service life

4. How to choose refrigerant? (Environmental Protection Trend)

Thailand is promoting environmentally friendly refrigerants following international trends. Selection needs to balance compliance and performance:

Refrigerant

GWP Value

Features & Trends

R404A

High (Approx. 3922)

Stable performance, but facing high environmental pressure and being phased out

R448A / R449A

Medium (Approx. 1270~1397)

Transitional alternatives, performance close to R404A

R290 / R32

Low

More eco-friendly, safety design for flammability required

5. Single Unit or Parallel Unit?

Parallel units connect multiple compressors into one system, and the cooling capacity adjusts automatically with the load.

Index

Single Unit

Parallel Unit

Cooling Capacity

Fixed

Adjustable by stages

Redundancy

Shuts down once the unit fails

Multiple compressors back up each other for higher reliability

Energy Consumption

Low efficiency under partial load

More power-saving under partial load

Initial Investment

Lower

Higher

Application

Small cold storage

Medium & large cold storage / multiple separate cold rooms

6. Condensing Method: Air-cooled, Water-cooled or Evaporative Condenser?

In Thailand’s high-temperature environment, condensing efficiency directly affects energy consumption.

Method

Efficiency

Water Consumption

Installation

Application

Air-cooled

Medium, greatly affected by ambient temperature

No water consumption

Simple installation

Small and medium cold storage, good ventilation required

Evaporative Condensing

High

Water required

Medium difficulty

Large cold storage, obvious energy-saving effect

Water-cooled

High

Large water consumption

Cooling tower required

Large systems with cooling water source

7. How to estimate cooling capacity? How much surplus should be reserved?

For preliminary estimation: about 80~120W/m³ for -18℃ freezer storage, and 40~60W/m³ for 0~5℃ fresh-keeping storage. For example, a 1000m³ freezer storage has calculated cooling capacity of 80~120kW. In actual selection, reserve 10%~30% safety surplus (multiply by 1.1~1.3) based on the calculated cooling capacity, to cope with heat load fluctuation caused by door opening, defrosting and goods loading. For precise calculation, engineers need to calculate heat load according to wall area, insulation performance and cargo volume.

8. How to compare energy consumption and COP?

Coefficient of Performance (COP) is the core indicator to judge whether the unit is power-saving. High-quality medium and large units usually have COP of 2.5~3.5, and higher value means lower power consumption. For the same 100kW cooling capacity with 20-hour daily operation, raising COP from 3.0 to 3.5 can save hundreds of kWh every day, bringing huge difference in electricity bills over time. Electricity cost in Thailand is relatively high, so energy efficiency greatly affects operating cost.

9. Common Mistakes in Unit Selection

Common mistakes: Blindly choosing oversized units, resulting in frequent start-stop and energy waste; ignoring insulation panel thickness which leads to cold loss; only focusing on initial cost instead of long-term energy consumption; ignoring heat dissipation and ventilation design under Thailand’s high temperature. The correct way is comprehensive evaluation combining working condition, load, energy consumption and after-sales service.

10. Summary

To select a cold storage unit, start with usage and target temperature, then confirm compressor type, refrigerant, single/parallel form and condensing method. Work out cooling capacity via heat load calculation, reserve safety surplus, and prioritize COP (Coefficient of Performance). Under Thailand’s hot and humid climate, choose units with good heat dissipation, reliable redundancy and high energy efficiency. Cooperate with professional installation teams to achieve stable temperature control and low long-term operating cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Must we choose scroll compressors for small cold storage? A: Not necessarily. Scroll compressors suit small projects with stable and quiet operation. Piston compressors are also widely used for small cold storage. The decision depends on cooling load and budget.

Q2: Are parallel units always more power-saving than single units? A: They usually save power under partial load by switching compressors on demand. But they cost more at first. Single units are more cost-effective for small and medium cold storage.

Q3: Can we still use R404A refrigerant? A: It is usable under current compliance rules, but faces strict environmental regulations. New projects are recommended to adopt R448A / R449A for balanced performance and environmental compliance.
